Kochi: Newly elected CPI(M) General Secretary Comrade M A Baby addressed the gathering at the party’s 24th Congress, acknowledging the uphill battle the Left faces both globally and nationally. Drawing a sharp comparison, he remarked, “Some people say communists do not have much scope. Rightist forces are strong throughout the world. In India, we have a nephew of Trump in Modi.”
However, Comrade Baby stressed that this was only one side of the picture. He pointed out the resurgence of Left and progressive forces across Latin America and praised the historic achievement of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala for securing consecutive terms in power — a rare political feat.
While admitting the difficulties confronting the Left in India, he emphasised that the CPI(M)'s 24th Party Congress had laid down a clear roadmap to tackle these issues by staying connected with the masses and spreading political awareness.
Concluding his address, he urged all attendees to actively mobilise for the May 20 national strike called by workers against the contentious labour codes, calling it a crucial moment for collective action and solidarity.
“Let’s make May 20 a massive show of strength against anti-worker policies,” he said in a rousing call to action.
