Mumbai : On 28 April 2025, a Marathi biography titled "Epoch Maker Karl Marx: Life, Work and Thought" written by former Central Committee member of the CPI(M) Ramdas Menon, and beautifully translated by Prof Shobha Theckedath, was released at an elegant function in the heart of Mumbai by the Left Publishing House Janashakti Granth Prakashan.
Among those who released the book were translator Prof Shobha Theckedath, son of the legendary CPI(M) and CITU leader B T Ranadive, Uday Ranadive, Janashakti Granth Prakashan President Dr Ashok Dhawale, Director Dr Uday Narkar, and Managing Editor Vijay Patil.
Prominent among the wide spectrum that attended the function were Dr Anand Teltumbde, former Bhima Koregaon detenu and celebrated author of the reflective biography of Dr B R Ambedkar called "Iconoclast", Dr Bhalchandra Munagekar, ex-MP, intellectual and former Vice Chancellor of Mumbai University, Husain Dalwai, ex-MP, director Vijay Kenkre, vocalists Neela Bhagwat and Amarendra Dhaneshwar, lawyer Adv Sunil Dighe, writers Arjun Dangle, Sanjeev Chandorkar, Chhaya Datar, Vijaya Chavan, Neera Adarkar, Subodh More, journalists Vidyadhar Date, Pratap Aasbe, Deepa Kadam, Haaris Shaikh, science movement activists Adwait Pednekar, Dr Shridhar Pawar, social activists Kranti Jejurkar, Smita Gandhi, Aniruddha Limaye, Dr Sushama Limaye (son and daughter-in-law of socialist leader Madhu Limaye), and others. Most of these are renowned names in Maharashtra.
From the CPI(M), prominent attendees were Polit Bureau member Mariam Dhawale, State Secretariat members Dr S K Rege, Shailendra Kamble and Prachi Hatiwlekar, former State Secretariat member Prof Tapati Mukhopadhyay, State Control Commission Chairperson Prof Madhu Paranjape, State Committee members Preethy Sekhar, Adv Chandrakant Bhojgar, and others.
Immediately after the book release, the 'Pratyay' group from Kolhapur presented a two-hour two-act play in Marathi called "Marx in Soho". Originally written in English by the American socialist historian Howard Zinn, it has been brought into Marathi by Sahil Kalloli and directed by eminent actor-director Dr. Sharad Bhuthadia. It has a renowned star cast led by Dr Sharad Bhuthadia, and comprising Aditya Khebudkar, Rasiya Padalkar, Ashish Polke, Suhas Lakade, Dr. Omkar Kulkarni and Rutuja Badve. The powerful and sensitive play on the life and work of Marx held the audience in rapt attention.
A Janashakti Granth Prakashan book stall put up at the venue had a brisk sale of over Rs 25,000, which included the newly released book on Marx and also earlier titles of Janashakti Granth Prakashan.
