Reliance Foundation, Jaljeevika, Ratnagiri Fisheries Department Promote Seaweed Farming Among Guhagar Fisherfolk


Guhagar : To empower coastal communities with alternative livelihood options, a special training session on seaweed cultivation was organized at Kond Karul by Reliance Foundation, Jaljeevika Foundation, and the Ratnagiri Fisheries Department

The program included valuable guidance by Reliance Foundation regarding marine weather updates, potential fishing zones, and other relevant information.

Representatives from Jaljeevika Foundation explained the importance of seaweed, business opportunities through seaweed conservation, and seaweed management techniques. Practical demonstrations on raft construction for seaweed cultivation were carried out by Raj Pawar and Shrushti Surve from Jaljeevika.

Mr. Chinmay Damle, Project Manager at Jaljeevika, informed the fisherfolk that seaweed farming can generate employment opportunities and support economic progress at the local level.

Mr. Swapnil Chavan, Licensing Officer from the Fisheries Department, Guhagar Taluka, encouraged the fishermen to consider implementing seaweed cultivation projects according to their capabilities. He also briefed them on various departmental schemes and the importance of the monsoon fishing ban. Additionally, he urged more fishermen to register under Accident Group Insurance and on the NFDB portal through Sagar Mitras.

Mr. Rajesh Kamble, District Manager of Reliance Foundation, explained how seaweed farming can be a viable supplementary livelihood for fishermen. He assured that all technical guidance required for seaweed farming will be provided by Jaljeevika and the Fisheries Department.

The event was attended by Chinmay Damle (Project Manager, Jaljeevika), Raj Pawar (Project Coordinator), Shrushti Surve, Vinayak Shinde (Marine Supervisor), Sagar Mitras, security guards, Gaurav Jadhav (Program Assistant, Reliance Foundation), and Local fishermen and women from Kond Karul village.
