Mumbai, May 16 (Correspondent): The Bombay High Court has ordered the closure of the dumping ground at Kanjurmarg. To pressure the administration into complying with this order, a one-day chain hunger strike was held outside Vikhroli railway station. A signature campaign was also organized on this occasion. Shiv Sena MLA from Vikhroli constituency, Sunil Raut, along with Yuva Sena executive member Rajol Sanjay Patil, visited the protest site and participated in the signature campaign.
The High Court had recently ordered the evacuation of the Kanjur dumping ground within three months. However, there has been no visible immediate action taken on this order. In response, local residents of Vikhroli launched a signature drive and held a one-day symbolic hunger strike outside the Vikhroli station to raise their voices against the inaction of the administration. The protest received strong support from the local citizens, with thousands of commuters traveling by train signing the petition in support of the movement.
MP Sanjay Dina Patil had repeatedly raised the issue of shutting down the Kanjurmarg and Deonar dumping grounds. He had prominently brought up the matter in Parliament as well. His efforts have borne fruit, as the municipal corporation has now sanctioned approximately ₹2,300 crore for clearing waste from the Deonar dumping ground. A contractor will soon be appointed for the task.
