Mumbai, May 3: Community radio is an extremely important medium to reach the remotest corners of society. Community radio stations across the country should work to provide a platform to every section of society through this medium, said Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, L. Murugan.
On the occasion of the ongoing global conference 'WAVES 2025' in Mumbai, the 8th National Community Radio Sammelan (Conference) has been organized. Shri Murugan addressed the gathering during the inauguration of this event. Secretary of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting Sanjay Jaju, Joint Secretary Prithul Kumar, and Director General of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication Dr. Anupama Bhatnagar were also present on this occasion. Community radio stations that have demonstrated outstanding performance were honored with various awards such as Innovative Communication, Promoting Local Culture, and Sustainability Model Awards.
Minister Murugan stated that the programs broadcast on community radio reflect the sentiments of the local community, their culture, art, literature, cuisine, and more. As this conference is being held in the context of WAVES 2025, it has gained a unique dimension. He expressed satisfaction that through community radio, not only information and entertainment but also efforts toward women empowerment, cultural promotion, and rural development are being made. He also emphasized that going forward, community radios should make greater use of technology to reach wider communities.
Following the inauguration ceremony, a series of panel discussions on various topics related to community radio were organized throughout the day. These sessions included deliberations on financial development and empowerment of community radios. Experts from various universities and representatives from different community radio stations across the country participated in these discussions.
